Parul is a designer and architect who joined Dharmalaya Institute’s team in 2024.

In her words:

Eco-construction is where my heart finds purpose, a path shaped by the timeless wisdom of vernacular architecture and the deep connection between people, places and materials. My hands-on journey with mud and bamboo has taken me across cultures and climates, each experience enriching my understanding of how architecture can be both rooted and regenerative. The call of alternative materials isn’t just a curiosity; it’s a journey I’m eager to continue, crafting spaces that honor both tradition and the earth.

Shivraj

Artisan & Trainer

Trained by Didi Contractor herself and her team of artisans, Shivraj is a treasure trove of detailed knowledge on the Kangra vernacular construction with 20+ years of experience as a carpenter. Much of the woodwork on Dharmalaya Institute’s campus is a result of his keen eye and workmanship. (He also makes amazing channa daal.)

Daphne Charles

Facilitator, Architect, Designer

Daphne is a holistic architect practicing internationally; a certified Passive House consultant; a licensed Biogeometry practitioner; and experienced yoga teacher (and teacher trainer) and cofounder of Routes of Yoga. She leads Dharmalaya Institute’s Architecture and Design faculty, and she is cofounder of Dharmalaya Institute’s sister school in the USA, Earthville Institute.

Growing up in both Singapore and Australia, Daphne gained an early appreciation for diversity of experience and perspective. Recognising the universal importance of balance — in body, mind, relationship, and environments — led to Daphne’s twin professions as yoga teacher and holistic architect. Seeing that our “inner” and “outer” worlds are merely different aspects of the same whole, living system, as expressed in our ancient wisdom traditions, Daphne seeks in all her work to catalyse harmony between thought, action and manifestation.

Mark Moore

Mark Moore is an experiential educator, eco-social entrepreneur, natural builder, retreat facilitator, composer-producer, writer-editor and designer.

He has been launching and nurturing altruistic and creative projects around the world since 1997. He is one of the two principal cofounders of Dharmalaya Institute for Compassionate Living and of its sister school, Earthville Institute, in the USA, both of which are member projects in the Earthville Network, a global nonprofit organization that Mark founded in 2000.

A common thread uniting his diverse activities is putting compassion into action through joyful service.

Mark’s main focus since 2010 has been developing immersive, contemplative service-learning programs integrating sustainability with inner development, catalyzing the empowerment of warm-hearted changemakers.

One of Mark’s greatest passions — both in his own projects and as a consultant — is the art and craft of compassionate cultural container-building. That is, the design, establishment and refinement of purpose-driven communities, organizations, and environments that embody the values and qualities they seek to promote. He draws on both traditional wisdom and fresh creativity to leverage the power of insightfully sculpted organizational cultures to bring out the best in the humans that comprise them and manifest more impactful and harmonious results.

Mark is a trustee of the Ronald E. Moore Foundation and serves on several other boards and advisory groups. He also serves as a meditation retreat facilitator and mentor for Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche’s Tergar Learning Community, and has volunteered for myriad educational and charitable projects worldwide since 1987.

He loves nature, travel, music, and fair-trade vegan chocolate.

Mai-Linh

One of the two principal cofounders of Dharmalaya Institute, Mai-Linh has been studying and practicing Buddhist teachings, yoga and meditation for decades. Living in Switzerland and doing service work internationally, she facilitates meditation programmes as well as workshops in communication and soft skills development. Her passion is to support people to grow into their potential.

Naresh is a builder from Rakkar, HP, with over 30 years of experience working with esteemed eco-architect Didi Contractor. He has served as our foreman and earthen building advisor since we began our first construction in 2010. Naresh says, "Hello, I love to work with natural materials and would like to contribute towards saving our environment and raising the local economy.”

I'm a "Structural Engineering with Architecture" graduate from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland — which is to say that I spent a long time in a world that was far removed from natural phenomena. Whilst I was really interested in sustainability and climate change from a young age, solutions that were being developed in the so-called "developed" world did not seem to address the fact that we humans are also a part of nature — an expression of nature with the ability to care, nurture and change our environments.

In finding Dharmalaya and truly internalizing our philosophies, I found the patience and commitment to observe, reflect and finally act from a place of intention and cultivated wisdom.

Sourabh Phadke

Sourabh is a craftsperson, mason and architect who has been a member of the visiting faculty at Dharmalaya Institute since the beginning and has led courses, workshops and earthen construction projects around India. He earned a Masters of Arts degree from the Prince's Foundation's School of Traditional Arts in the UK. He is currently teaching craft at the School of Traditional Arts in London. www.soarhub.in

Tsunma Kunsang Palmo is a nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition who has completed several years of retreat practice. She teaches meditation and facilitates retreats in India and Nepal and online with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche’s Tergar Learning Community.
